Just 52 moths of 15 species, but a Dewick's Plusia and two other NFY were good value. Other migrants were a Delicate and a Dark Sword Grass. The Dewick's Plusia was the second site record, I wonder if the Turnip mohs are possibly migrants.

The first three species are all similar and can be confusing. Beaded Chestnut and Lunar Underwing are both variable and any that do confuse can be separated by a quick check of the hind wing.

Species List for 19/9/2014

A foggy but mild night brought another male Four-spotted Footman and the first two Beaded Chestnuts were the stars of the day. In total there were 274 moths of 41 species.

 The male Four-spotted Footman lacks the spots of the female but is a distinctive large footman.

 The yellow and black patches at the base of the forewing are distinctive.

 Some Beaded Chestnuts are relatively plain, the small narrow kidney and pointed wings are quite distinctive.

Other examples have much more distinct radiating pale lines and look quite similar to Lunar Underwings. The dark hind wings are diagnostic in this case.
