Autumnal Rustic

A good day for surprises. I was debating retiring my 80W no1 trap for the season,but it produced the first Clancy's Rustic of the season. The second surprise was a False Codling Moth, a moth from Africa, and probably one brought into the country on Citrus Fruits. Nevertheless there have been very few records to date.

The first Silver Y for 15 days was one of five species of migrants,the others being Diamond-back Moth, Delicate, Scarce Bordered Straw and Rush Veneer,  but all were singles. In addition Turnip and White Point could also be visitors. In total there were 183 moths of 25 species. The Scarce Bordered Straw was the 47th this year.

Two more Scarce Bordered Straws brought the total to 46 for the year, the same as in the record year of 2006 on this day. That year ended with 163, so it will be interesting to see the progress in the next six weeks. In total there were 188 moths of 25 species.

A much calmer night, but cold. All six traps out brought 133 moths of 18 speices. Seeing the head of a large moth peering out of an egg box brought some anticipation,but it turned out to be a Red Underwing.

I must admit, if it hadn't been for Sean Clancy catching a Silver-striped Hawk-moth two nights ago near Dungeness I wouldn't have put my traps out in with Storm Aileen promising a rough night. I should have followed that instinct. The find blew one of my traps over and blew a swing seat over that caused the cable to one of my traps to be ripped out of its plug. All that and just 34 moths of nine species put in an appearance.

After a blank night with no mothing I tried again, despite a cold and very blowy night. There were just 153 moths of 20 species, but his included two Lunar Underwings and a Feathered Gothic confirmingthe shift to autumnal moths. There was also the 42nd Scarce Bordered Straw of the year.
