Mothing at The Hidden House, St Margaret's at Cliffe, Tony Morris: Clancy's Rustic

Mothing at St Margaret's

Most of the Moth lists and Photographs are from my garden (TR359450) in the village of St Margaret's at Cliffe in Kent. It is situated about 1Km from the sea and has farmland with in 100 metres. The garden is well shrubbed and about 1600 sq metres. I normally run a 125 MV lamp and a 15W actinic light over-night and once the season gets going a couple of other traps. At the moment both are 25W black Lamps. previously I used a 160W blended lamp in one of them. All traps are home made. Trapping dates refer to the date the trap was put out.

Trap Update in 2017. A new 125W MV Robinson was added to a 125W MV Skinner, 15W Actinic Skinner, two 80W MV Morris modified Skinners and a 80W MVMorris Box trap.

Traps are now (2020 onwards) 2x 125W Robinsons, 2x 80W Skinner type and 1x 15W Actinic strip light on a Skinner type .

I try and identify all the Macro Moths, with the micros I am not at all systematic, I do more than I used to with the help of the new book, but there are some that do get through.

Still not a lot to get excited about with 286 moths of 26 species. Three moths were worth noting, a Black Rustic, the earliest date I've had one, a Clancy's Rustic, the first of the autumn generation, and a Delicate, the eighth tthis year, but the first since July 19th.

Species List for 25/09/2017

I've been moaning for ages that almost everyone else in East Kent has caught at least one Clifden Nonpareil. Pam even saw one a while ago when I was abroad and Phil Chantler released one by the Monument. Last night should put a stop to my moans, well on this subject anyway. A couple of quick pictures, it is a bit battered, but I'm not complaining. In addition there was Ni Moth which was my 7th record. A total of 257 moths of 37 species.

A good day for surprises. I was debating retiring my 80W no1 trap for the season,but it produced the first Clancy's Rustic of the season. The second surprise was a False Codling Moth, a moth from Africa, and probably one brought into the country on Citrus Fruits. Nevertheless there have been very few records to date.

My first Boxworm, and a "brown" type. I would think that it might be a migrant here. A second Clancy's Rustic for the year, but little else of note.
