A much calmer night, but cold. All six traps out brought 133 moths of 18 speices. Seeing the head of a large moth peering out of an egg box brought some anticipation,but it turned out to be a Red Underwing.

A male Gem was the best moth last night, but one of my favourites was also the first for the year, a Red Underwing.

Species List for 24/9/2014

199 moths, but of these 167 were just three species. In total there were 23 species with Sallow new for the year. The view of a large "Catocala" in one trap had me momentarily excited, there have been a few "Blue Underwings" around and I've new caught, or even seen one. This turned out to be a Red Underwing, beautiful in its own right, but still not a show topper.

The very windy weather after the wet and stormy entrance and departure of Bertha should have been enough to tell me not to bother. There were few moths but a Red Underwing brightened the morning and was a first for the year.
