Back in the days I was growing up we had no TV, computers or phones, and in the summer holidays we used to spend our time outdoors. As well as various adventure games with Russell Pierce we used to collect the local wild life, grasshoppers, butterflies etc, and watch the birds in the area. For me it became a passion, but for many years one of the missing groups, apart from finding Privet-hawk caterpillars and Woolly Bears, Garden Tiger Caterpillars. That was moths. Then around 1996 Ann Lawson and Andrew Duff did something amazing. In their garden, using a home made trap they caught a moth that had been thought to be extirpated from the UK for 30 years. I went to see this little beauty and that started me on the new hobby of Mothing. In Crayford I caught six Small Ranunculus, and of course have slide pictures of them all. We moved here in 2000 and although I had caught around 445 species of macro moths in the garden, Small Ranunculus didn't feature. You can imaging my delight then when my eyes alighted om a small Noctuid and immediately thought "that looks like a Small Ranunculus and so it proved.
