Passenger, caught 23/9/2006 (National moth night).

Mothing at St Margaret's

Most of the Moth lists and Photographs are from my garden (TR359450) in the village of St Margaret's at Cliffe in Kent. It is situated about 1Km from the sea and has farmland with in 100 metres. The garden is well shrubbed and about 1600 sq metres. I normally run a 125 MV lamp and a 15W actinic light over-night and once the season gets going a couple of other traps. At the moment both are 25W black Lamps. previously I used a 160W blended lamp in one of them. All traps are home made. Trapping dates refer to the date the trap was put out.

Trap Update in 2017. A new 125W MV Robinson was added to a 125W MV Skinner, 15W Actinic Skinner, two 80W MV Morris modified Skinners and a 80W MVMorris Box trap.
Traps are now (2020 onwards) 2x 125W Robinsons, 2x 80W Skinner type and 1x 15W Actinic strip light on a Skinner type .

I try and identify all the Macro Moths, with the micros I am not at all systematic, I do more than I used to with the help of the new book, but there are some that do get through.

SPecies List for 6/10/2013

Another three Scarce-bordered Straws and I think all different from those of a couple of days ago. Not only do they have pretty individual patterns, but I'm releasing the scarcer moths that I photograph a few hundred yards away. I know from previous experiences with Garden Tigers that some moths will return from considerable distances but I think that this is unusual. In all there were 18 micro moths of five species and 230 macro moths of 24 species.

One of two fairly standard Scarce Bordered Straws, but both were lively and showed the hind-wing well.

This one was rather grubbier looking. In the previous influx in 2006 some I caught were really my darker than most illustrations.

A more intensely marked individual that the one I showed on my St Margaret's  Photo Diary a few days ago. In nice condition showing the slightly hooked wing tips.

It's always good to catch an L-album Wainscot, it means I get the chance to appreciate the wonderful names given to so many of our moths all over again!.

Species List For 5/10/2013

No Network access for me from mid-day yesterday, but working OK now. Another Delicate and Four-spotted Footman were the highlights. A very fresh Flounced Rustic was a surprise, but he continued number of postvittana has an air of foreboding for my apple crop.

Another male Four-spotted Footman. Either the females tend not to come to light or all these males must be feeling very lonely!
A very good year for this species with 109 recorded so far this yer. Previous best 73 in 2009 and 60 in 2006.

Another Delicate, an appropriate name for this refined relative of the Clay.

Species List For 4/10/2013

Only four species of micro moths, 29 individuals and 246 macro moths of 30 species. Four Rush Veneers,a Dark Sword-grass, a second Scarce Bordered Straw, a Delicate and a Silver Y were my contribution to an influx of migrants.

 Scarce Bordered Straw
 A different individual to yesterday.

 Green-brindled Crescent
 Another autumn Green thing.

  The Delicate
The first of this migrant this year.

 Pine Carpet
A tatty individual from the back hedge!

 Brown-spot Pinion
I don't know why I hadn't caught this before this year?

Agapeta hamana
It seems rather late for this handsome Tortrix.

Species List for 3/10/2013

A couple more migrants, a first Scarce Bordered Straw for the year and a second Pearly Underwing. My apples my be riddled given the number of postvittana I'm catching. Other than that just one more micro moth and 287 macro moths, ( 148 Setaceous Hebrew Characters) but only 22 Species.

Scarce Bordered Straw, a scarce immigrant, but one that has featured strongly here previously, I trapped 163 in the invasion of 2006.

From this view it is difficult to see one of the best features of a Pearly underwing that can bee been without opening up the wing.

Pearly Underwings have a really striking "Punk" hairstyle, still fashionable in some continental football teams!

A Dark Chestnut, showing the slightly hook shaped wing, on the left side. Unfortunately there's a bit of damage on the right side.

Species List for 2/10/2013

Two Four-spotted Footman seemed pretty good and finding that Nigel had two more at Kingsdown and Julian another in North Kent indicates at real influx. As I had a bit of time I took a few photos of the catch.

This Deep-brown Dart is rather more contrasty and well marked than most that I've caught before. Some are almost as dark as the closely related Black Rustic.

Barred Sallows vary in the intensity of their marking and their colour. The one above is at the darker end of the variations.
This is paler in the ground colour but is more contrasting with the darker bars. Like all the Sallows these are attractive end of season moths.

The Autumnal Rustic has a rather calm look about it, nothing flashy and very neat, but still very much a symbol of this time of the year.

For anyone who is red-green colour blind, and colour blindness is common in males and vary variable in its severity the name Red-green Carpet is very off putting. I normally get Pam to check anything that is supposed to have a green content, Brindle, Pug etc. but this carpet does have a very individual pattern and I hope that I've got it right without using Pam's eyes!

I've only caught one Four-spotted Footman before this year, a male in  August 2010. These are the third and fourth this year, a real surprise. Only the females have the spots but all I've caught have been males.
Last nights total was 43 micro moths of three species (41 postvittana) and 349 macro moths of 30 species, with 70% being Setaceous Hebrew Characters and Large Yellow Underwings.

Species List for 1/10/2013 - Humming-bird Hawk-moth

A couple of surprises last night. A male Gem and a Hummingbird Hawk-moth broke what has became a bit of a repetitive few days.

This Hummingbird Hawk-moth was only the fifth to find itself inside any of my traps. Most records are of moths nectaring in the sunshine.

This is the second Gem of this year and the eighth I've caught since I've been here. As in most of my records, it is a male.
In total last night there were 26 micro moths of four species and 384 macro moths of 29 Species.

Species List For 30/9/30

One of the delights of this time of year is finding one of the autumnal specials among the Large Yellow Underwings and Setaceous Hebrew Characters.Today was the turn of the fabulous Merveille du  Jour. Meaning marvel of the day it does its best to live up to its name. During October I ran four traps on 25 nights. A total of 11934 moths were caught of 150 species. Setaceous Hebrew Characters accounted for 4766 and Large Yellow Underwing 2114 of these.
