Mothing at St Margaret's
Most of the Moth lists and Photographs are from my garden (TR359450) in the village of St Margaret's at Cliffe in Kent. It is situated about 1Km from the sea and has farmland with in 100 metres. The garden is well shrubbed and about 1600 sq metres. I normally run a 125 MV lamp and a 15W actinic light over-night and once the season gets going a couple of other traps. At the moment both are 25W black Lamps. previously I used a 160W blended lamp in one of them. All traps are home made. Trapping dates refer to the date the trap was put out.
I try and identify all the Macro Moths, with the micros I am not at all systematic, I do more than I used to with the help of the new book, but there are some that do get through.
Trap Update in 2017. A new 125W MV Robinson was added to a 125W MV Skinner, 15W Actinic Skinner, two 80W MV Morris modified Skinners and a 80W MVMorris Box trap.
Traps are now (2020 onwards) 2x 125W Robinsons, 2x 80W Skinner type and 1x 15W Actinic strip light on a Skinner type .

Species List for 8/3/2012
After several days when the weather was too bad to bother trapping, followed by a completely blank night I caught the grand total of four moths last night. I popped into Sandwich Bay B.O. today and discovered this was twice as many as them!

A couple of moth from Last Night.
This very tatty "Chestnut" appeared this morning in my actinic trap. I think it is a Chestnut rather than a Dark Chestnut, even though it is difficult to see the shape of the outer edge. I think that this is The Chestnut, the right side probably shows enough wing shape to rule out Dark Chestnut.
.
Another micro I'm not sure of. I believe it is an Agonopterix species possibly ocellana or scopariella. It might not be possible with out dissection. I think that Peter Maton's suggestion (on UKmicromoths group) of Agonopterix heracliana is right for this moth. This is new for the site.

After a blank night last night it was good to get a few moths last night. In addition a Agonopterix heracliana was identified from a photo - see above.

Species List for 27/2/2012
Four species and the first time I think I've caught a Tortricodes alternella. In the pot it looked OK and seemed to show some of the contrast evident on Peter Maton's photo on his blog. Now I've photographed it I'm not so sure as the lighter anterior end and darker posterior end don't show on the pictures. On We are the Campions some don't look as bi-coloured but I'd be pleased to get comments. Comments on UK-moths and here indicate the ID is OK.
At least I know what the next one is!

Species "List" for 24/2/2012
After several blank tries I finally started my 2012 list. Despite the fact that I do quite well during the summer this garden is never very productive at the beginning and end of the seasons.
I won't be putting up pictures of every moth, but I thought the first two of the year were worth a show. It's a pity they are not a more photogenic species.

New for 2006!
Brindled White-spot (Parectropis similaria)I was looking through some old pictures from June 2006, when I came across this moth that I hadn't identified. It was caught on June 7th and is undoubtedly a Bridled White Spot. I don't know why I didn't put a name to it then, but it remains the only record I have of it. It was worth looking through the old pictures!
