Species List for 30/08/2017

After a warm day the temperature plummeted and a cold, damp night saw a crash in the number of moths. Although there were still 559, there were only 23 species and 68.2% were  Setaceous Hebrew Characters and 18.1% Large Yellow Underwings. A Scarce Bordered Straw was the 40th this year.

I think that this is only the second time I've caught over 1000 moths (other than Diamond-backed Moths), and 663 Setaceous Hebrew Characters was a record. There were 1015 moths of only 52 species, but including a Loxostege sticticalis, only the third I've caught.In addition there was a Hummingbird Hawk-moth nectaring round the garden.
