Species List for 1/10/2013 - Humming-bird Hawk-moth

A couple of surprises last night. A male Gem and a Hummingbird Hawk-moth broke what has became a bit of a repetitive few days.

This Hummingbird Hawk-moth was only the fifth to find itself inside any of my traps. Most records are of moths nectaring in the sunshine.

This is the second Gem of this year and the eighth I've caught since I've been here. As in most of my records, it is a male.
In total last night there were 26 micro moths of four species and 384 macro moths of 29 Species.

  1. Nice catch Tony,
I've never seen a HBH-m 'in the hand' and Gem is high on my hit list for this year. It's been a pretty good migrant year so far in VC30 (Beds.), l hope it continues....ATB

  2. Hi Matt, Hummers are strange, so charismatic when flying but nondescript when perched.
