Two Noctuids Identified as Large Nutmegs

Thanks to Paul Sokoloff and Eamonn O'Donnell for getting me on the right track for these two Large Nutmegs.

Noctuid 1 - Slightly larger than Rustic Shoulder-knot. A brocade or brindle?

Noctuid1 - on 2mm grid

Noctuid 2 - Just about the same size as the Rustic Shoulder-knot caught with it.

Noctuid2 - on 2mm grid

  1. Both look like LArge Nutmeg to me Tony, I'm plagued with them!

  2. Thanks Matt, that seems to be 100% agreement. Interestingly Nigel Jarman, who moths at Kingsdown (2.5 miles north along the coast) hasn't ever had one there. So they are not so common in our neck of the woods.

  3. Quite a few of these turning up in Thanet too Tony ... unfortunately in everyone's traps barring the two I run in my garden. Francis has taken quite a few around his two coastal traps and Gadget took two one night last week from his garden trap. I know one of the other garden Pegwell traps took one as well. They have been around in unprecedented numbers. Good mothing/birding ... Phil.

  4. Thanks phil, I wonder then if they are migrants, with so many turning up at coastal traps.
